One of the most common questions we get at Mustangs Hockey ProShop is:
"What sharpening should I use?"
The answer isn't the same for everyone. Your ideal sharpening depends on your weight, skating ability, position, and personal preference. A small change can make your skates feel completely different on the ice.
Using our SPARX 3 Skate Sharpener, every sharpening is precise and consistent, so you get the same feel every time.
What is Radius of Hollow (RoH)?
When your skates are sharpened, a groove is cut into the bottom of the blade. This is called the Radius of Hollow (RoH).
The depth of that groove affects how your skates perform.
- Deeper hollow (3/8", 1/2") = More grip, tighter turns, quicker stops.
- Shallower hollow (9/16", 5/8") = More glide, better speed, and less resistance.
There isn't a "best" hollow—it's about finding the balance that works for your skating style.
Traditional vs. FIRE Sharpening
Besides traditional sharpening, we also offer FIRE (Flat Bottom) sharpening.
Unlike a traditional rounded hollow, FIRE creates a flatter contact surface that gives many players extra glide while still keeping strong edge control. It can feel noticeably faster, although it usually takes a session or two to get used to if you're switching from a traditional cut.
Our Sharpening Options
Traditional RoH
- 3/8"
- 1/2"
- 9/16"
- 5/8"
FIRE
- 1/2 FIRE
- 5/8 FIRE
- 3/4 FIRE
Which Hollow Should You Choose?
Here's a simple starting point:
| Player | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Youth (under 45 kg) | 3/8" or 1/2" |
| Teens (45–68 kg) | 1/2" or 9/16" |
| Adult Recreational | 9/16", 5/8", or 5/8 FIRE |
| Competitive Players | 5/8", 5/8 FIRE, or 3/4 FIRE |
| Maximum Glide | 3/4 FIRE |
These are only guidelines. Your skating style and the ice conditions matter just as much.
What About Goalies?
Goalie skates are different. Goalies rely on edge control and powerful lateral pushes more than straight-line speed.
A good starting point is:
- 3/8" – Maximum grip for younger or lighter goalies.
- 1/2" – The most popular all-around choice.
- 9/16" – More glide while keeping solid edge control.
- 5/8" – Great for stronger, experienced goalies who want easier movement across the crease.
- FIRE – Smoother glide with reliable bite, ideal for goalies looking to reduce fatigue. but fragile if you hit the post.
How Often Should You Sharpen?
As a general rule:
- Competitive players: every 8–15 hours of ice time.
- Recreational players: every 15–25 hours.
- Goalies: every 10–20 hours, depending on preference.
If you hit concrete, a goal post, or notice your edges feel dull, it's time for a sharpening.
A Tip From the ProShop
One mistake many players make is assuming that more bite is always better. A very deep hollow can actually slow you down and tire your legs faster, while a shallower hollow may help you skate more efficiently.
If you're trying a new sharpening, don't judge it after one session. Give yourself two or three skates to adjust before deciding if it's right for you.

The best sharpening isn't necessarily the most popular one—it's the one that helps you skate with confidence.
